What motivates you most as a coach?
What motivates me is getting the chance to help younger and upcoming athletes strive for success by getting in the gym. Seeing an athlete progress and get better in their performance and it translates to success in their sport is the most rewarding thing in coaching.
What’s your favorite sports memory—either as an athlete or a coach?
My favorite sports memory is my professional debut. I remember during the national anthem, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I told myself I was proud of the work I had put in and that the little kid that dreamed of playing pro would be proud of me and where I got to.
How would you describe your coaching philosophy in one sentence?
The athlete who grinds day after day, even when it’s not fun, is the one who dominates when the lights turn on.
What do you enjoy most outside the gym—hobby, hometown activity, etc.?
Outside the gym I enjoy hobbies that keep me active. I love getting out on the golf course with friends and playing 18. When I can, take road trips down to Southern California and surf during the summer. During the winter, I love snowboarding. Recently I have picked up DJing, its been great because I love music.
What’s one unique thing about your background or journey that shapes how you coach?
I was a late bloomer as an athlete and didn’t excel until later, so know that, understanding that every athlete has a different path. But the one constant that must stay true, is hard work. So when it comes to coaching, making sure the athlete knows that the path they are on is the right path as long as the effort is 100%.
